Blue Heelers and Blue Skies: A Terrific “Tail”

A Pilots N Paws Rescue “Tail” from Marysville to Pine Mountain

It’s 6:43 AM and already warm enough that even my Piper Warrior is sweating. Or maybe that’s just me.

I’m back at Marysville Airport for my sixth Pilots N Paws mission this year, proving once again that owning a plane is less about logic and more about fluff. Specifically, three fluffy Blue Heeler puppies that apparently need an Uber ride out of the mountains.

I sip bad coffee and glance at the horizon. The Sierra Nevadas blink at me like a challenge.

“Let’s go rescue some chaos on four legs,” I say to nobody, because my airplane can’t talk. Yet.

The Pre-Flight: Checklist, Cuteness, and Caffeination

I do a thorough pre-flight inspection of the Piper Warrior, mostly to avoid becoming a headline. She’s clean, fueled, and ready for action.

I throw an extra blanket in the back for the pups. Comfort is key. After all, if I had to leave my shady cabin in the woods, I’d want first-class accommodations too.

My GPS is dialed in: a quick hop southeast to Pine Mountain Lake Airport (E45). A flight so scenic even the GPS wants to take pictures.

Paw-sengers Onboard

The breeder is being shut down for reasons I don’t ask about. I prefer my karma medium-rare and drama-free.

Not Singing the Blues

When I land at Pine Mountain Lake, three tiny Blue Heeler pups tumble into my arms like they rehearsed it. One licks my sunglasses. Another pees on my shoe. The third sits proudly like a co-pilot who knows how cute she is.

“I didn’t bring enough treats for this level of adorable,” I mumble.

We load up, and I slide in behind the yoke. The pups nestle into the coziest blanket like seasoned travelers. I swear one of them winks.

Takeoff: Tailwinds and Tail Wags

I throttle up and we soar off the runway like it’s a Disney movie. The Sierra foothills roll below us in golden waves.

The air is smooth, the sun is kind, and the puppies are oddly quiet. Suspiciously quiet.

I glance back. They’re smiling. Literal dog smiles. One is even tapping a paw like he’s about to break into dance.

Relaxing in FIRST CLASS

If I had a pair of blue suede shoes, I’d join them. Instead, I hum Elvis and try not to cry from the joy of it all.

Piper Warrior: Powered by Puppy Power

We cruise southbound toward Visalia. The pups nap, waking up occasionally to gaze out the window like they’re scouting for squirrels.

They’re clearly naturals. I might need to log them in my logbook as “emotional support copilots.”

I tap the Garmin. ETA to Visalia is 47 minutes. My fuel’s good. My heart’s full. I remind myself that flying has its costs—gas, maintenance, snacks—but this is worth every penny.

Descent Into Furball Heaven

Visalia Airport appears like a mirage. The morning haze gives everything a storybook glow.

Rocket Dog Rescues is already waiting. They’ve got crates, water, and one volunteer who squeals audibly at the sight of the pups.

Cheryl, The Puppy Savior – Rocket Dog Rescue

“These three are going to the best homes,” she says, petting their heads like royalty.

The pups wag goodbye with full-body enthusiasm. One tries to jump back in the plane. I get it, buddy. This Warrior’s got soul.

The Goodbye: Wagging Tails and Teary Eyes

I kneel to say goodbye. They lick my face like they’re thanking me—or maybe I just taste like airport snacks.

I watch as Rocket Dog Rescues drives away, a trio of happy Blue Heelers in the back. Their forever families await.

Rocket Dog Rescue

The Piper Warrior sits behind me, tail still and proud. We’ve done good today.

Mission six, complete.
