Need a little “Honey” in your day? A Golden Animal Rescue Flight

Sunshine and Solar Farms: The Morning’s Rescue Flight

It’s a perfect November morning in California as I step onto the tarmac at Cable Airport, my Piper Warrior waiting patiently. The sky is bright, crisp, and I’m grinning like a kid on Christmas morning. Today, I’m not just flying—I’m on a rescue mission to bring a dog named Honey to her forever home. Who doesn’t need a little honey in their life? It’s an animal rescue flight day.

The plan? Head north from Upland, over the San Gabriel Mountains, and into the Central Valley to pick up Honey, a Golden Retriever-Labrador mix who has had a rough start in life. With a patched-up gash on her chest, she’s ready for her fresh start. My trusty Piper Warrior, a well-loved 4-seater with her fair share of scratches, stands out among the fancier aircraft here, but she’s sturdy and has been on plenty of these missions with me. And, I like to think she loves the job.

Taking Off to Tehachapi

With the engine humming and clear skies above, I take off from Cable Airport, soaring northward. There’s something about early mornings like this—the light just right, the air smooth as butter, and the freedom to go wherever the wind takes you. Or, in this case, where Honey takes me.

Flying over the San Gabriel Mountains, I get a peek at solar farms stretched out on the desert floor below. There’s a wild patchwork of browns and greens, with tiny silver patches of solar panels catching the morning light. It’s like Mother Nature went all modern art with the high desert.

Fresno or Bust: Honey’s Waiting!

Before long, I’m nearing Fresno Executive Airport, also known as Chandler KFCH. We radio the airfield to coordinate an easy visual, straightforward route into the airport. I picture Honey, a spirited little furball, eagerly waiting for this “airborne chariot” she’s been promised. A small chuckle escapes as I wonder if she has any idea that the chariot is a not-so-glamorous (but ever-loyal) Piper Warrior.

When I touch down, Sam and Mona are already waiting on the ramp, along with a golden fluffball who spots me before I see her. Honey’s tail goes into hyperdrive as if she’s got a built-in propeller. I can’t help but smile as she drags poor Sam over to me. Her enthusiasm is contagious; she’s ready for her grand journey, her new life, and perhaps some sky-high treats.

“Ready to fly, Honey?” I ask her as if she can understand me. She gives an enthusiastic bark, which I take as a resounding yes.

I’m READY to go on my rescue flight!!

Barking, Boarding, and Naps

Getting Honey settled into the plane is a mix of wrestling and teamwork. She’s clearly excited but soon realizes this isn’t your typical car ride. Sam hands me the leash and we get her settled. With a pat and a wag, Sam and Mona say their goodbyes, and it’s time for takeoff.

As we climb into the air, Honey is all wags and wiggles, looking out the window, taking in the sights. Then, as quickly as her excitement appeared, she flops onto the seat and snoozes off. Typical dog. The drone of the engine must be the best lullaby she’s ever heard.

The Central Valley Unfolds Beneath Us

Flying through the Central Valley this time of year is truly serene. The farmlands are calm, and there’s just a light haze softening the landscape. Honey doesn’t know it yet, but we’re well on our way to her new life. In these moments, it’s easy to forget the world below and just appreciate the view.

For me, animal rescue flights like this are a labor of love—and sometimes, caffeine. Speaking of, my noise-canceling headphones (#ad https://amzn.to/3Yp9c44, are totally worth it) keep the hum manageable, though I do miss the soft “whuffs” Honey makes in her sleep.

Final Approach to McClellan Airport

In just under an hour, McClellan Airport appears on the horizon. Honey stirs, sensing we’re getting close. As I descend, she pokes her nose out, giving me a quick nuzzle as if to say, “Almost there, buddy.” I chuckle and give her a reassuring pat.

Honey is READY for her forever home

On the tarmac, Stacey from Coco Precious animal rescue, is waiting as her face lights up the second she spots Honey. Honey practically leaps out of the plane, all energy and wags, ready to greet her next friend. Stacey beams as Honey bounds over, clearly a match made in heaven.

Honey’s Rescue and New Beginning

I hand Stacey Honey’s leash and paperwork before saying goodbye. Honey doesn’t need any encouragement to give Stacey her best puppy eyes, tail wagging a mile a minute. It’s like she knows she’s made it to the next chapter.

I stand back, watching them get acquainted. There’s something magical about these moments—knowing that a life has been changed, that a rescue has been completed, and that somehow, in the middle of the blue California sky, I got to be a part of it.

With a tail wag and a little doggie grin, Honey bids me farewell. As I watch her walk off into her future, I realize that she’s sweetened my day more than I could ever sweeten hers.
