Discovering Kauai’s Hidden Beauty: River Float with Back Country Adventures

Kauai, often dubbed the “Garden Isle,” conceals its most enchanting secrets within its lush backcountry. Our recent adventure with Kauai Back Country Adventures brought us face to face with the island’s hidden beauty. Today, we’re on a river float tubing excursion that traverses private lands and ancient sugarcane tunnels.

Unlocking the Secrets of Private Lands

The journey begins with a warm welcome from our guides at Kauai Back Country Adventures. Nestled in the heart of the island, their property provides a gateway to exclusive areas not accessible to the public. This exclusive access means our river float tubing adventure would unfold in pristine surroundings, away from the usual tourist routes.

It’s a short 15 minute drive to the tube launch in an off-road bus with open siding. The November rains greet us with a brief outburst as we travel up the dirt roads. Our driver stops for a brief photo-op near the Tropic Thunder movie set.

Unveiling the History of Hand-Dug Tunnels

Arriving at the river launch, our guide mentions the water may be a bit “refreshing” this morning. He also mentions using any “C” words such as COLD and CHILLY are splashable offenses.

Hand dug tunnels and canals

As we embark on our tubing escapade, the guides regale us with tales of the land’s rich history. The five, hand-dug tunnels, are remnants of a bygone era when sugarcane farming thrived, serve as portals to the past. Gliding through these tunnels, we marvel at the ingenuity of the plantation workers who carved these passages to irrigate the fields.

Nature’s Water Park

The river float tubing itself is a symphony of serenity and excitement. Drifting along gentle currents, we are surrounded by the vibrant foliage of the backcountry. The cool waters provide a refreshing escape from the Hawaiian sun, and the occasional mild rapids add a touch of adventure to the journey.

Local Guides and Aloha Spirit

What makes the experience truly exceptional are the local guides. Their deep connection to the land is evident in the stories they share and the genuine aloha spirit they exude. From pointing out native flora to sharing insights into the island’s culture, our guides make the excursion not just an adventure but a cultural exploration.

A Day of Unforgettable Memories

Our river float tubing adventure with Kauai Back Country Adventures is a day filled with unforgettable memories. Beyond the thrill of tubing down meandering waterways, we discover a side of Kauai that remains hidden to many. It’s a journey through time and nature, a celebration of the island’s heritage and the untamed beauty that defines it.
