Celebrating 250 Years With Two Dogs and Two Freedom Missions

People often ask whether these missions become routine.

I smile every time. The answer is always no. The checklist stays the same. The airplane stays the same. The runway stays the same.

The mission never does.

Every dog has a story. Each volunteer has hope. Every landing changes someone’s life forever.

That thought keeps me from slipping into autopilot.

June Begins with a Little Pug Named Chanel

The June sunrise paints Marysville Airport in soft orange light. My faithful 1979 Piper Warrior waits patiently. She almost looks eager. Maybe she knows another furry passenger is coming aboard.

I finish my preflight inspection. Fuel looks good. Oil looks good. The weather looks even better. California seems determined to show off today.

Soon the Warrior rolls toward the runway. The engine hums happily. I grin. It feels like another adventure.

Technically, it is another rescue.

Emotionally, it never feels ordinary. Today’s destination is Fresno. Waiting there is Chanel.

She is an adorable little pug. Her tiny rear legs no longer work. She scoots along using an adorable little wheelchair. Honestly, she looks faster than I walk.

Chanel Has One Last Chance

Chanel’s owner loves her deeply. Life simply became too difficult. Age eventually catches everyone. Sometimes it catches beloved pets too.

She is surrendered to Fresno Animal Control.

That sentence alone hurts. Sadly, Fresno has earned a difficult reputation. Dogs without homes often run out of time. Especially special-needs animals.

Thankfully, wonderful people exist.

A kind woman named Mona discovers Chanel. She refuses to let time win. She quickly coordinates transport. A rescue near Jackson agrees to welcome Chanel. Now all she needs is wings.

That part becomes my job.

Meeting the Sweetest Passenger

Chanel arrives wearing her little wheelchair. Her face says everything. She trusts everyone. She loves everyone, and she expects snacks.

Ms. Chanel – Our June Rescue Mission

Honestly, I admire that optimism.

We remove her wheelchair before loading. She settles onto a blanket immediately. Then she snorts happily. Apparently the seating arrangement meets her approval.

Chanel’s Mission – NAP TIME

Before engine start, she curls into a perfect little loaf. I secretly think airlines should hire pugs for customer satisfaction surveys. Nobody complains while looking that adorable.

The Sky Feels Bigger Today

We climb into smooth California air. Fields stretch forever below. Mountains rise quietly beyond them. The Warrior settles into cruise. Chanel sleeps through nearly everything.

She briefly opens one eye.

I suspect she checks whether snacks have appeared. Finding none, she returns to sleep. Probably the smartest decision made all morning.

Flying these Animal Rescue Flights reminds me why I volunteer.

These are not simply airplane rides. Sometimes they become the difference between life and death. That reality keeps every checklist meaningful. It keeps every radio call important. It keeps every landing precious.

Jackson Welcomes a New Beginning

Soon Jackson appears ahead. The landing feels smooth. I always hope the dogs appreciate good landings. They never leave reviews. Maybe that’s for the best.

The rescue team greets us with huge smiles.

Rescue Mission Complete

Chanel receives hugs immediately. Her wheelchair goes back on. She proudly wheels around like she owns the airport. Honestly, she might.

Everyone laughs. Everyone smiles.

Watching her roll toward her new future fills my heart.

One tiny pug. One airplane. One forever home.

That feels like a pretty successful morning.

July Brings Another Mission

Summer arrives quickly.

So does another phone call. This time Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue needs help. A handsome boy named Romeo needs transportation.

I don’t ask many questions.

Sometimes privacy matters. Sometimes dogs simply deserve fresh starts. That is enough for me.

Our destination is Santa Barbara.

The plan begins early. Very early. We launch before sunrise. Heat waits for nobody.

Neither does the coastal marine layer.

Timing matters. Fortunately, coffee also exists. That helps tremendously.

Southbound in the Warrior

The Warrior climbs smoothly once again. California unfolds beneath us. Golden hills blend into vineyards. Rivers sparkle like polished glass.

CA Rescue Missions Bring Lots of Beauty

I never grow tired of these views. Even after thousands of hours flying.

The engine hums steadily. Everything feels peaceful. Except my stomach. Luckily I brought along a few PB&J’s. They always fill the void.

Romeo Boards Like a Professional

Meeting Romeo answers every question.

He is magnificent. His Chesapeake Bay Retriever smile fills the room. His tail immediately begins sweeping the floor. Someone should issue that thing an airport beacon.

He boards confidently. He circles twice. Then he lies down. Mission accepted.

Unlike human passengers, he never asks about Wi-Fi. He never complains about baggage fees. He never questions my playlist.

Mr. Romeo’s Recovery Mission

Honestly, dogs remain aviation’s best customers.

Six Hours That Matter

The roundtrip takes nearly six hours. Romeo naps. Then he watches clouds. Then he naps again.

He occasionally checks whether I packed treats. Apparently that remains an important safety inspection.

Romeo’s Mission….SNACKS

Flying these Animal Rescue Flights always reminds me how generous people become.

Complete strangers donate time. Rescues donate endless effort. Pilots donate their skill and planes. Families open their homes. Together they create miracles.

One airplane cannot save every animal. Although, many volunteers together certainly save thousands.

The Best Landing of the Day

The destination finally appears.

A family waits beside the airport. Their excitement is impossible to miss. Romeo notices them immediately. His tail enters maximum operating speed.

I think nearby windsocks become jealous.

The family kneels. Romeo walks straight into their arms. No hesitation. No uncertainty.

MISSION COMPLETE

Just pure happiness.

Promises are exchanged. They promise to love him forever. Judging by Romeo’s expression, he believes every word.

So do I.

Watching reunions never gets old. Neither do new beginnings.

Never Fly on Emotional Autopilot

People love a happy ending. The rescue routes occasionally repeat. Even the airports sometimes repeat. Life does not.

Each passenger carries a different story. Every family carries different emotions. Each rescue carries different hope.

That is why I refuse emotional autopilot.

Flying requires attention. Compassion requires even more.

Every Animal Rescue Flights mission deserves both.
