Pilots N Paws Rescue Flight | Marysville to Carson City

Some days flying reminds you why airplanes exist in the first place.
This was one of those days.
It started like many rescue missions do — a beautiful blue-sky morning at Marysville Airport. My daughter Rosebud and I loaded up the Piper Warrior, double-checked the dog harness in the back seat, and prepared for another Pilots N Paws mission.
The plan was simple:
- Depart Marysville (KMYV)
- Fly to Lodi Airport (1O3)
- Pick up a little Benji-looking rescue dog named Phil
- Cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains
- Deliver him safely to Carson City, Nevada
Simple plan. Beautiful weather. What could possibly go wrong?
Departure… With a Fighter Jet Arrival
We departed Marysville on a smooth climb into perfectly clear skies.
But just after takeoff, ATC had other ideas.
“Radar Contact, maintain 2,000 feet for traffic.”
Fair enough.
Then the controller casually added the reason.
An F-16 was inbound to the nearby Air Force Base.
Now when ATC asks you to stay low because an F-16 is arriving… you don’t argue.
A few moments later we saw it.
The fighter jet streaked overhead about 1,000 feet above us, slicing through the sky like a missile with wings.
Rosebud looked up and said exactly what every pilot thinks in that moment:
“Well… that’s definitely faster than us.”
Accurate.
Arrival at Lodi – Meeting Phil
After the unexpected airshow, we continued south toward Lodi Airport in Acampo.
Waiting there was Dane, a good Samaritan who had quite the story.
A few days earlier, he found a small scruffy dog sitting on his doorstep.
He had no collar.
No tags.
There were no explanations.
Dane and his kids took him in, fed him, and gave him a warm place to sleep while they searched for the owner.
They posted online, asked neighbors, and checked local shelters.
No one claimed him.
But instead of giving up, Dane found help.
Mia, an animal-loving rescue coordinator, connected the dots and found a rescue willing to take him.
That rescue was Boxers and Buddies in Carson City, Nevada.
And that’s where the airplane came in.
When we opened the cabin door, Phil hopped right in like he’d been flying his whole life.
Honestly, some passengers are more nervous than that.

Climbing Over the Sierra Nevada
With Phil buckled in and ready for adventure, we departed Lodi and pointed the Warrior toward the Sierra Nevada.
The weather could not have been better.
Crystal clear skies.
Snow-capped peaks.
And the unmistakable blue water of Lake Tahoe shining like glass below us.
Phil mostly slept through the scenic portion of the flight.
Which honestly might be the best passenger review a pilot can receive.
He had no complaints.
No turbulence commentary.
No requests for snacks.
Just peaceful snoozing at 9,500 feet.
Final Approach Into Carson City
After crossing the mountains and descending into the high desert of Nevada, we touched down in Carson City.
Waiting on the ramp was Sarah from the rescue Boxers and Buddies.
The moment Phil stepped out of the airplane, his tail started wagging like a helicopter rotor.
He had no idea his life had just changed.
But it had.

Phil now had a second chance.

By sunset, he was safely in Carson City beginning a new life.
Not bad for a little Piper Warrior and a blue-sky day.
And yes…
Getting buzzed by an F-16 along the way didn’t hurt either.
