Runways to Highways: A Foggy 2025 Puppy Rescue Adventure

I stand on the ramp at Marysville Airport and study the gloomy sky.
The clouds hang so low they look ready to brush my hat.
My faithful Piper Warrior waits patiently, like a dog sitting at the door with a leash in its mouth.

Unfortunately, winter has grounded us again.
Even the tower radios seem depressed.

Still, Pilots N Paws rescue missions do not pause for weather.
So today, instead of rolling down the runway, I fire up something with less glamour and more cup holders.

My truck.

“Dad,” my daughter—my trusty co-pilot—says as she climbs in, “are we flying today?”

“Only if we hit a big enough pothole,” I tell her.

She gives me the classic stare that suggests I am both her hero and her greatest source of cringe.

When Winter Cancels Flights but Not Missions

The winter weather keeps pounding California, and every IFR forecast looks worse than the last.
But somewhere out there, dogs still need help.
So instead of flying high, we start driving.

Today we head south to Sacramento, then east toward the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Our first passengers of the season: two fifty-pound mountain pup twins destined to become one-hundred-pound canine freight trains.

The drive takes an hour each way.
Coincidentally, this is exactly how long it takes my daughter to narrate everything outside the window.

When we arrive, the pups greet us with full-body enthusiasm.
The sister bounces like she swallowed a pogo stick.
Her brother trots over with the regal confidence of a small buffalo.

“Hi babies,” I say as I kneel down.

They immediately flatten me.

So far, so normal.

The Mountain Pup Twins Take Over the Truck

Bernese Pups escaping the breeder world

We load them into the truck.
My daughter straps in beside them like a flight attendant dealing with large, furry passengers who definitely did not read the safety card.

“Do we have snacks?” she asks.

“We always have snacks,” I assure her.

The pups settle in—by which I mean they sprawl the kennel, and on top of each other.

“Dad,” she groans, “The sister is getting smooshed.”

Little Sister Bernese Becomes a Pillow

“It’s good training,” I say. “She’ll be ready for the mountains.”

The pups snore in perfect stereo all the through the Sacramento Valley.
The interior now smells like warm fur, puppy breath, and the faint aroma of hope.

This is what makes a Pilots N Paws rescue special—air or ground, the mission feels the same.

A Wee Corgi Lass With a Trembling Heart

A few weeks later we head out again.
This time, we meet a tiny twenty-five-pound corgi mix surrender.
She is trembling despite her little orange jacket.

My Shadow is My Nemesis…But I’ll Be OK

Her eyes dart at everything.
Noise. Leaves. My shoelaces.

I crouch down slowly.
“Hi little sister,” I say.

After a moment, she presses her shaking head into my hand.
My daughter whispers, “She’s afraid of her own shadow.”

“She’ll borrow ours,” I tell her.

We tuck the wee lass into the truck.
She curls behind us and watches me with wide, evaluating eyes.

Maybe This Isn’t So Bad

Halfway home her breathing softens.
She settles—finally believing she is safe.

My daughter rests a hand on her back.
“She just needed someone to choose her.”

River Rescue will choose her.
That is what they do best.

From Sacramento Valley to Sierra Foothills—Hope on Every Highway

River Rescue greets all three dogs with open arms and treat-filled pockets.

The staff flows around them like a well-choreographed ballet:

  • Humans speak in gentle, happy voices
  • Dogs begin to relax

Our Pilots N Paws rescue journey continues even without taking off.

The pups find comfort.
The corgi lass finds safety.
We find a sense of purpose that no winter weather can cancel.

My daughter squeezes my hand.
“We helped them,” she says.

“Yes,” I tell her. “And now the next heroes take over.”

River Rescue specializes in turning frightened arrivals into beloved family members.

A Pilot Reflects on a Season Without Altitude

I admit—I miss the view from 6,500 feet.
The Sacramento Valley looks different from the ground.
But there is something beautiful about the winding roads, quiet orchards, and rolling foothills.

This winter I trade radios for leashes.
Flight plans for driving playlists.
Crosswind landings for cross-county road trips.

Instead of “Warrior One-Two-Three, cleared to land,” I hear:
“Dad, the puppy drooled on my backpack.”

Both bring joy.
One brings more laundry.

But the mission remains unchanged.
Altitude doesn’t define a Pilots N Paws rescue.
Compassion does.
