Saving Grizzly and Dolly: Dog Days of Summer Rescue

Rescue Flight #7: Piper Warriors, Puppy Wiggles, and Rosebud Rides Again

I swear, I can smell the puppies before we even preflight the Piper Warrior.

It’s early morning, again, at Marysville Airport, and the valley air already hints at the triple-digit heat it’s saving for later. But for now, there’s just a soft hum of life stirring—the chirp of birds, a distant rooster who clearly missed his alarm, and the very serious sound of my daughter, Rosebud, zipping up the flight bag with military precision.

She’s a gentle soul, but runs the cockpit like she’s ex-Air Force.

“Checklist ready, Dad?” she asks, climbing into the right seat like she owns it.

“Yes, ma’am,” I reply. “You’ve got right seat today. You also get full belly-rub duty.”

She grins. “I was born ready.”

Today marks our seventh Pilots N Paws rescue flight this year and it’s shaping up to be one of the cutest. We’re headed to Visalia Airport (KVIS) to pick up two mystery mutts named Grizzly and Dolly. No one’s sure of their backstory. It could be a breeder shutdown. Could be an owner surrender. Maybe they just showed up like magical, tail-wagging unicorns at a truck stop. Doesn’t matter.

What we do know: they’re small, fluffy, and way too cute to stay stuck in the valley.

We’re bringing them to Cameron Park (O61) where the wonderful team at Foothill Dog Rescue will take it from there.

🛫 DEPARTURE: FUR IN THE FORECAST

Preflight complete. Engine purring. Puppy rescue playlist cued (mostly Taylor Swift since Rosebud is in charge).

As we climb out over the golden haze of the Sacramento Valley, Rosebud’s already snapping photos of the sunrise. I glance over to see she’s captioning one:

“Flying to save the fluffies. Co-pilot and cuddle captain reporting for duty.”

She’s marketing-ready.

At Visalia, the ramp is quiet, but we spot them right away—Grizzly and Dolly, bouncing out of the truck, tails thumping so hard the thing vibrates across the concrete like a Roomba on a mission.

“Cuteness alert,” Rosebud says.

Grizzly, a scruffy little tan bag of excitement, climbs directly into Rosebud’s lap. Dolly, his faithful companion, looks like she was designed in a Pixar lab, tries to lick my headset. It’s pure chaos and it’s perfect.

✈️ EN ROUTE: TAILS, TREATS & TURBULENCE

We climb back to 4,500 feet, headed north toward Cameron Park. The air is smooth, and I’m grateful. It’s a short flight, but keeping the cabin cool is a priority. The pups stretch out across the backseat, alternating between naps and supervised snacking.

Rosebud, naturally, offers plenty of pets and scratches

“You think they know this is a rescue flight?” she asks, stroking Dolly’s floppy ears.

“I think they know it’s a love flight,” I say. “Which is better.”

We cruise over orchards, rivers, and a few lonely farmhouses. Grizzly starts snoring. Dolly presses her tiny nose against the window like she’s trying to memorize the world.

This—this is why we fly.

🛬 ARRIVAL: CAMERON PARK HUG SQUAD

We land in Cameron Park around 11 AM. Kerry from Foothill Dog Rescue is waiting on the ramp with a giant smile.

“I’ve heard about these two!” she says, reaching into the plane.

Before we officially hand them over, Rosebud insists on “the standard departure hugs.” It’s basically a regulation at this point. Grizzly gives her one last lick. Dolly leans into her chest and sighs, like a well-loved stuffed animal.

Kerry clips the leashes and the pups trot off toward their new future, tails high.

🎉 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: BURRITOS & BRAVERY

Post-flight tradition calls for lunch. We debrief over burritos and taquitos and way too much hot sauce.

“I think they knew they were safe,” Rosebud says between bites.

“Yeah,” I nod. “I think they knew.”

Seven rescue flights in a Piper Warrior, and each one changes something in us. We fly with hope in the front seat and healing in the back.

We’ll be back in the air soon. There’s always another pup who needs a lift.

But for today, we’ve done good.

And the airplane still smells like freedom.
